Rich South sophomore Crandall Head put on quite a show Saturday at the Assembly Hall shootout, but his 34 points, six rebounds and three steals weren’t quite enough to avert a 62-60 loss to Champaign Centennial.

Head and Carlton Guyton (14 points) ignited a fourth-quarter burst that enabled the Stars to overcome a six-point deficit. Guyton’s three-pointer with 1:15 left in the game tied it at 60-60. Bryson Davis-Johnson’s layup with :30 to go was the game-winner.

The 6-foot-3-inch Head never touched the ball in the final minute as Kendrick Morse (eight points, eight assists, four steals) drove to the basket twice without scoring–he was whistled for a charging foul on the second drive. Rich South fell to 3-4 while Centennial is 8-2.

Head, the younger brother of ex-Illinois guard and current Houston Rocket Luther Head, said he hopes to make an oral commitment sometime after the New Year. He said Illinois is his favorite school and that he isn’t seriously considering any other college.

In the first game of the day, Mt. Zion defeated Urbana 79-43.
