Manchester, N.H. – Attempting to soften Sen. Hillary Clinton’s image, her campaign began airing a new television ad in Iowa today featuring her mom, Dorothy Rodham.

“What I would like people to know about Hillary is what a good person she is,” says Rodham. “She never was envious of anybody—she was helpful. And she’s continued that with her adult life with helping other women.”

The 30-second ad features a black-and-white photo of Clinton as a baby, images of Clinton and Rodham together in a kitchen with the words “Hillary’s Mom lives with her” scrawled on the screen, and shots of Clinton with her mom and daughter, Chelsea, on the campaign trail in Iowa.

Public opinion polls show Clinton trails badly in the likeability category, and many voters question her motives or think she is cold and calculating.

“She has empathy for other people’s unfortunate circumstances. I’ve always admired that because it isn’t always true of people,” Rodham says.

“I think she ought to be elected even if she weren’t my daughter,” Clinton’s mom concludes.
