The senior guard took the big shots and gave the Admirals a 60-59 victory over Hales Franciscan.
Down 59-58 with 57 seconds left, the 6-foot guard drove the lane. He missed his first shot but put back the rebound amid taller players for the game-winner with 31.5 seconds left.
“The first half I was 0-for-5 shooting,” said Williams, who scored 11 of his 12 points in the second half. “I came out in the second half more focused. I’ve been on varsity for four years; at times I try to put the team on my back. I felt it was my [time]. I got loose. I just kept going for it, to the basket instead of shooting those jump shots. I got in there pretty easy. They really didn’t box me out.”
The big finish saved Farragut (3-0) from a late fade. The second of two consecutive Michael Dunigan dunks early in the fourth quarter gave the Admirals their biggest lead at 50-42. The 6-foot-9-inch Oregon recruit finished with 19 points.
Trailing 58-51 with 3:41 left, Hales Franciscan (3-4) scored nine straight points and took the lead on Donell Cooper’s circus shot with just under a minute left. Josh Crittle missed a desperation shot at the buzzer for the Spartans, who lost in the Marshall County (Ky.) Hoopfest Saturday.
“They’re a ranked team in the city,” Dunigan said. “They played last night. It shouldn’t have gone down the way it did. We should have outplayed them, no doubt about it.”
Dunigan added 12 rebounds and six blocks. Senior forward Marvin Thigpen added 13 points for Farragut.
Marcus Campbell and Phillip Williams topped Hales with 16 points apiece. Fellow Oregon recruits Matthew Humphrey and Crittle scored nine and eight points respectively for the Spartans.
