Sen. Barack Obama saw the letter and upped the ante to a proposed Senate resolution, as reported yesterday on The Swamp. Today, the flare up on Iran policy in the Democratic primary race continues.

News of the Illinois Democrat’s resolution (linked below the jump) arrived Thursday after the Huffington Post reported that Obama had not signed onto a letter that 30 other senators, including Dick Durbin and Hillary Clinton, had sent to the White House.

The letter urges President Bush not to take offensive military action against Iran without the consent of Congress. (Click on the download to view the letter):Download file

Many of those who signed the letter, including Durbin and Clinton, recently voted for a measure that labeled the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization as part of a “Sense of the Senate” amendment.

Obama’s campaign responded that the letter, led by Sen. Jim Webb, was not enough to deal with the situation.”Senator Obama admires Senator Webb and his sincere and tireless efforts on this issue,” the campaign said in a statement. “But it will take more than a letter to prevent this administration from using the language contained within the Kyl-Lieberman resolution to justify military action in Iran. This requires a legislative answer and Senator Obama intends to propose one.”

Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt later said Obama introduced a binding resolution that would “nullify the vote the Senate took to give the president the benefit of the doubt on Iran.”

It seems we have not heard the last of the Kyl-Lieberman amendment.

The Associated Press also has a dispatch on the matter, linked here.
