Don’t want to be a pretty girl/Don’t want to work for tips/And hurl myself across this sad dance floor.
That lyric from “Pretty Girl,” a track off Diana Jones’ “My Remembrance of You,” is heart-rending. But Jones couches it in this pretty voice slashed with rivulets of sadness — tired, tired sadness. Don’t let the country trappings fool you, though. Diana Jones sings the blues, and she’s not messing around. She’s sharing a bill with Mary Gauthier’s dusty, gritty snarl (see Concertline, page 12). To casual listeners, Jones and Gauthier are opposites, but down inside, they’re the same — emotion laid bare by beautiful voices.
