St. Charles East’s Lizzy Hynes easily won the Schaumburg sectional title Saturday.
But the junior–along with the rest of the girls in the Class 3A finals at Peoria’s Detweiller Park–face a difficult job next Saturday: beating Sandburg’s Kristin Sutherland.
“Well, top two is definitely a big aspiration for me,” said Hynes after running a time of 17 minutes 41.45 seconds to top runner-up Kelly Whitley of Geneva by more than 10 seconds at Busse Woods. “Kristin is kind of in her own league.
“If she, by some strange chance, drops the ball, I definitely want to take over. She’s a huge favorite. But anything can happen. There have been some surprises.”

Hynes is hardly a slouch. She now has won three consecutive sectional titles and last year finished sixth in Class AA at state. This season she took St. Charles East’s season-opening Leavey Invitational and the Wheaton North championship flight.
“I’ve definitely surprised myself,” Hynes said. “I did better than I expected this season. I think the best is yet to come. Next week when I really start getting down to business, I think I’m going to put up a really good time.”
