Ben Affleck arrived for a screening of his directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone,” at the Music Box Theatre on Wednesday and was greeted not only by fans but by a chill in the air.
“The last time I was in Chicago, it was about 90 below zero,” the actor said as he walked the red carpet. “But that’s OK; this is like Boston weather.”
And his film, which was screened as part of the 43rd Chicago International Film Festival, happens to be set in his hometown of Boston. Based on the gritty Dennis Lehane novel, “Gone” is about a private investigator (played by Casey Affleck, who joined brother Ben on Wednesday night) hired to help track down a kidnapped 4-year-old girl.
Affleck said that because it was his first time behind the camera — he also co-wrote the screenplay — he welcomed input from his cast.
“It was a wonderful experience. For me, what I tried to do was just to allow people to feel that they are a part of the process. As an actor, I’ve always felt better working for somebody if I was part of a collective process, where everyone’s contributions were genuinely considered, evaluated and valued. That was the approach I tried to take.”
