Marshall turned to one of its own Wednesday in naming ex-Commandos standout Courtney Hargrays to succeed Lamont Bryant as its boys basketball coach.
Bryant, who compiled a 108-23 record in four years at Marshall, was fired Tuesday but will remain at the West Side school as a physical education teacher.
“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity ever since I came back to Marshall,” said Hargrays, the three-time all-city guard who was a boys assistant coach from 1998-2002 and a girls assistant the last five seasons. “I’m going to stress a high-octane offense and ignite our fast break with a pressure defense.”
Hargrays played for two seasons at Arizona State, transferred to Mineral Area Junior College in Park Hills, Mo., and finished up at Louisiana Tech, where he averaged 18 points a game as a junior. A lower back injury sidelined him for most of his senior year.

Hargrays inherits a program that finished third in Class AA the last two seasons and features guard/forward Ryan Hare, 6-7 center Dorian Tyler and guard Ardarius Simmons.
