Now Appalachian State knows what Michigan felt like.

Wofford upset Appalachian 42-31 on Saturday, serving notice that although Appalachian upset Michigan earlier this season, the Mountaineers won’t simply cruise through their own Southern Conference.

From the first quarter on — when Wofford intercepted Armanti Edwards on the third snap of the game and later scored a touchdown on a 49-yard pass — this game was studded with dazzling plays. The Terriers controlled the game with their option-style rushing attack that racked up 291 yards on the ground and 431 total yards.

“Every time we needed a big play, we got one,” said Wofford coach Mike Ayers, whose team ended Appalachian’s 17-game winning streak, the longest in Division I.

Entering the game, Wofford was ranked No. 13 in Division I-AA. Appalachian was No. 1 and hadn’t lost a game in the Southern Conference since 2005.

“We know that we have an ‘X’ on our chest and it will be there all year because of what we’ve done,” Appalachian quarterback Trey Elder said. “It’s not like we took them lightly.”

Appalachian coach Jerry Moore said: “They executed well and we tackled badly.”

Wofford’s fans stormed the field after the game. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” Wofford safety Dan Tavani said.
