Michael Douglas has come to a realization in his career: He ain’t the man he used to be.
“I’m not too afraid of my age, but my action films probably will be limited,” the longtime actor told Armour & Co. when we caught up with him in Los Angeles a few days ago. “The last time I did one — ‘The Sentinel’ — I had Eva Longoria running past me in high heels, so I know I must have slowed down a bit.”
Instead, Douglas — who turns 63 on Tuesday — is concentrating on less strenuous acting jobs. Next up, he plays an unstable dad who is reunited with his estranged teen daughter (played by Evan Rachel Wood) after being released from a mental institution in the “King of California.” It’s not exactly one of his feistier roles like those in “Wall Street” or “Basic Instinct.” But Douglas — who is married to Catherine Zeta-Jones — is cool with that.
“I’ve tried, after having a degree of success, to allow myself to take more chances and do different things,” the actor told us. “I don’t think I am perceived as having some sort of an image. But when I look at my resume, I think I’ve got a pretty good batting average out there.”
