Every Bears fan of a certain age tears up when they watch the original “Brian’s Song,” which was screened Saturday during a special reunion of the cast at Millennium Park’s Harris Theater. The 1971 made-for-TV movie, of course, detailed the friendship of Bears running backs Gale Sayers (played by Billy Dee Williams) and Brian Piccolo (played by James Caan), who died of cancer.
We had to know: Does Sayers himself tear up when he sees the movie? “After the movie was made, they came to the Bears training camp and showed the movie to all the players,” Sayers told us before Saturday’s screening. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Yes, I did cry. But that was the last time I saw the full version.”
