Bears linebacker Lance Briggs refused to tell police why he fled after crashing his new Lamborghini last month, according to documents obtained by the Tribune under the Freedom of Information Act.

According to the documents, Briggs told Illinois State Police during an interview that he was driving in the left lane of the northbound Edens Expressway and wanted to pass a car in front of him. When he switched to the right lane to pass, he lost control of the $350,000 car and crashed near the Devon Avenue overpass, according to the documents (this sentence as published has been corrected in this text).

After the crash, Briggs fled before calling police to tell them it was his wrecked car sitting along the embankment. He met with police later that day.

Briggs was charged with fleeing the scene of an accident, a misdemeanor, failure to give immediate notice and improper lane usage for the Aug. 27 crash, police said.

Police say they are finished investigating the case, and Briggs posted $100 bond after the accident.
