Christian Bale knows why he’s starring in “3:10 to Yuma,” opening Friday.

“I don’t think I would have been cast in ‘3:10’ if it wasn’t for ‘Batman,’ ” said the star of “Batman Begins” and its sequel, “The Dark Knight.”

Bale recently wrapped the Chicago filming of “The Dark Knight.” His wife, Chicago-born Sandra “Sibi” Blazic, and their 2-year-old daughter, Emmaline, were with him this summer.

“We all have our kids coming to the set,” Bale said of the “Dark Knight” cast and crew. “It’s nice. It’s very nice to have visits from these little characters who don’t follow the protocol on a movie set. And it’s a very good thing for me to have something other than my work that I’m intensely absorbed in. I think — I feel — that it’s helped the work, to have more responsibilities and duties outside it.”

One duty Bale had on the “Dark Knight” shoot was once again dealing with that heavy latex Batsuit. He said he just cowboyed up and bore it.

“It ain’t nearly as hot as I thought it was going to be,” Bale said. “I’ve still got the puddles of sweat around my feet, but I thought it would be a lot worse.”

As for other aspects of the revitalized franchise’s sequel, Bale was reluctant to share much more than generalizations.

“This is the first time I’ve reprised a role; this is the third time I’ve worked with Chris Nolan,” said Bale, who also appeared in director Nolan’s period magic thriller “The Prestige.” “I can’t say much to you about it, but it’s a superb script that Chris and his brother have written.”

Next up for Bale is “I’m Not There,” in which he plays Bob Dylan. Then comes “The Dark Knight” in summer 2008, which is just fine with him.

“I love the ‘Batman’ movies,” he said. “I enjoy making them.”
