Departing Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is scheduled to speak tonight at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. to the cadets, faculty and administrators.

According to a Justice Department press release:

The Attorney General will offer his unique perspective on the application of a law-of-war framework to the conflict with al Qaeda as well as subsequent legal actions taken by the executive branch, Congress and the courts since September 11th, 2001.

No doubt he has a “unique perspective,”

that’s beyond dispute. As White House counsel, Gonzales approved of interrogation techniques for detainees suspected of terrorist connections that amounted to torture, according to experts and Bush Administration critics.

He also played a role in the administration’s controversial use of warrantless surveillance of phone calls.

Waterboarding, anyone?
