Demetrius Jones handled the drop from Notre Dame’s starting quarterback to backup with a mix of disappointment and resolve.
“His ego was a little humbled, but he’ll be OK,” LaShaun Dumas, the sophomore’s mother, said Tuesday. “He sounded fairly disappointed. He said he’s doing OK. He’s not happy with it, but he’ll live with it.”
Jones was not made available to speak with reporters Tuesday. The former Morgan Park star fumbled twice and completed just 1 of 3 passes in the Irish’s 33-3 loss Saturday to Georgia Tech.
“He had hurt feelings and was sort of disappointed,” Dumas said of her son’s demeanor after that game. “Not only did he not make the impression he wanted to, he also felt like he didn’t have the opportunity to, either. But he’s optimistic he’ll get an opportunity to play again.”
With true freshman Jimmy Clausen starting, that could be difficult. But the idea of a transfer has not come up in their conversations, Dumas said.
“Demetrius knows he’s there to get an education,” she said. “This is a little too premature in terms of thinking of making a decision one way or another.”
