Bocanegra likes Lee, not Cubs

Former Fire defender Carlos Bocanegra will accompany Landon Donovan to throw out the first pitch before Wednesday’s Cubs game. Just don’t expect Bocanegra to root, root, root for the home team. “I’m a Dodgers fan,” said Bocanegra, who is in town with the U.S. national team to face Brazil in an exhibition Sunday at Soldier Field. “Chicago is a great city and I would normally support the Cubs if they weren’t playing the Dodgers.” But Bocanegra added, “I watched Derrek Lee a few times when I was in high school and he was in the minor leagues playing for the [Rancho Cucamonga] Quakes, my hometown team.”

Carr starting over from scratch

Two days after a loss that sent shock waves, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr knows what his team must fix: just about everything. Carr said Monday that the Wolverines, who were penalized seven times and committed two costly turnovers in their historic 34-32 loss to Appalachian State, are starting from scratch heading into Saturday’s home game against Oregon. “What we have to do is become a more disciplined team, a smarter team,” Carr said. Michigan was in prime position to kick a winning field goal . but Jason Gingell’s kick was blocked by Corey Lynch. “With a chance to win the game, we didn’t execute a fundamental play — a play that we have worked extremely hard at,” Carr said.

Rocket’s elbow takes off early

Roger Clemens got banged up by the Seattle Mariners on Monday and then quickly left the clubhouse after the Yankees’ 7-1 loss to get an MRI exam on his balky right elbow. The 45-year-old Clemens, who allowed five runs and eight hits in four innings to lose for the first time since July 28, felt his elbow tighten during the game, manager Joe Torre said. “First three innings it was a manageable situation for him,” Torre said. Clemens’ next start would likely be Sunday at Kansas City. Clemens, who was gone before the clubhouse opened, was unavailable to comment. Clemens fell to 6-6 with a 4.45 ERA in 16 starts this season. He leads all active pitchers with 354 wins, eighth all-time.
