Bargain bins are too often filled with reject items, not deals. And some stores make bargain shopping feel like an upscale version of Dumpster diving. Sale seekers take note, a new Bucktown shop blends bargain with boutique.

The shop: Beta Boutique, 2016 W. Concord Pl. (773-276-0905), gathers designer clothing from overstock and sample sales and sells it for about 40 to 60 percent off the original price. Owner Janice Moskoff said her buying staff is “pretty opportunist” in hunting for the best designer deals. But the store isn’t a bargain basement. It focuses on contemporary styles such as designer jeans, trendy skirts and unique accessories.

Why it’s hot: Beta Boutique gets cool points for being tucked away on a side street. “People have to be in the know to know about it,” Moskoff said. Part of being in the know is understanding the store is open only Thursday through Sunday. Shopping on the other days is by appointment only. Another cool point goes to the changing inventory. Beta Boutique has carried items from popular brands such as BCBG and French Connection. But it also buys from little-known European and small-label designers.

What it’s not: Don’t go shopping for work clothes at Beta Boutique. “We don’t have formal suits,” Moskoff said. And be prepared: Beta Boutique might not have larger sizes. Moskoff said shoppers tend to pounce on the larger sizes first, but the store is working to mix up the size inventory.

Bottom line: The inventory changes constantly, so don’t wait to buy an item you love.
