Mike Small found out he had won the Illinois Open on Wednesday while in his car on the way to the airport. Small’s destination: Tulsa for the PGA Championship. Small shot a 66 for a two-shot victory over Kevin Streelman and Joe Cermak at the Glen Club in Glenview. Weather problems caused the tournament to be shortened to 36 holes.

It was the Illinois coach’s third Illinois Open title in a row and his fourth overall, tying him with Gary Pinns for the most victories in the tournament’s 58-year history.
