Father’s Day came a day early for Steven Louis Kintz.
Kintz co-owns Lady Belsara, and son Steven Matthew Kintz trains the 4- year-old filly.
They and several family members and friends had a get-together Saturday in the Arlington Park winner’s circle after Lady Belsara’s impressive frontrunning victory in the Grade III $175,000 Chicago Breeders’ Cup Handicap. Ridden by E.T. Baird, Lady Belsara was pressured throughout the 7-furlong race for fillies and mares.
It seemed that 2-1 favorite Trendy Lady was going to win when she edged in front late in the stretch. But then came a burst of speed from Lady Belsera, enabling her to win by a half-length in 1 minute 23.10 seconds.
“I thought I was home free, but she didn’t want to put the other horse away,” said Trendy Lady’s jockey, Rene Douglas. “She was looking to play around with the other horse a little bit. Unfortunately, she did it on the wrong day.”
The victory was the fourth in seven starts for Lady Belsara.
