A 13-year-old boy who enjoyed riding his bike to school was struck and killed by a dump truck Thursday on a busy Park Ridge street, authorities said.
Samuel Coberly was hit about 7:45 a.m. as he rode to Lincoln Middle School, where he was in the 7th grade, Park Ridge Police Chief Jeffrey Caudill said.
Paramedics treated the boy at the scene, but he was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 8:06 a.m., Caudill said.
“This has been hard on the firefighters and police in Park Ridge,” Caudill said. “We certainly extend our heartfelt sympathy to this family.”
Samuel, of the 1600 block of West Touhy Avenue, was riding east on Touhy when he was hit by the 18-wheel truck headed south on Aldine Avenue.
The driver, a 54-year-old man from West Dundee, had not been issued any citations late Thursday, Caudill said.
The teen “biked to school almost every day, weather permitting,” Caudill said.
Teachers at Lincoln told pupils about Samuel during classes Thursday, said Sally Pryor, superintendent of Community Consolidated District 64. Several children underwent counseling, she said.
“Sam was new to us,” Pryor said. “He enrolled in January and I think he was becoming acclimated to the environment.”
The boy transferred to Lincoln School from the Chicago Public Schools.
