Rock for a cause

When students get busy, fun things can happen, and the Voice for Asia benefit is no exception. This three-hour concert features an array of acts, including Singapore’s Corrinne May. This singer-songwriter got off to a heck of a start by winning a songwriting competition. Her prize was to co-write a song with legends Carole King and Carole Bayer-Sager. Rock on. The show is aimed at raising awareness of various social problems in Asia. According to UNICEF, 88 million of the 140 million orphans in the world come from Asia. So get over there and help out.

All aboard!

It’s time for what has become an annual rite of passage: the Loop “L” tour. For 40 minutes, you ride the train around the Loop, and hear about its life, times and history. Chicago Architecture Foundation docents will be on hand to explain every aspect of the ride that shouldn’t be just for tourists. The city in which many of us work, live and visit every day contains a great many surprises. Know also that there are two trains every Saturday, at 10 and 10:40 a.m., with tickets issued on a first-come-first-served basis, beginning at 9 a.m. Get them at the Chicago Office of Tourism center in the Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph St. You get three circuits of the Loop, and a window’s-eye view of many of this city’s great buildings. And yes, it’s free.

*10 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. Saturdays through Sept. 29, at the Randolph and Wabash CTA “L” station. 312-744-2400 or www.cityofchicago.org/tourism.
