“ELLIOTT YAMIN”
Elliott Yamin, the third-place finisher of “American Idol’s” fifth season, takes a few songs to find his groove on his self-titled debut. The opening cuts rely on generic sounding drum machines, feel a bit artificial, rushed and leave little impression beyond Yamin’s voice. But Yamin’s whiskey tenor is a sturdy, natural and resonant instrument reminiscent of the vintage soul era. And the CD’s latter half, starting with “I’m the Man,” signals the arrival of a multigenerational talent.
