Hard to believe, but 23 years ago, Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas edged out Gary Cole and Jimmy Smits for the roles that became household names: Crockett and Tubbs of “Miami Vice” fame. “Edged out? I don’t know if we were anywhere close to the edge,” Cole told Armour & Co. when we caught up with him in Los Angeles a few days ago.

Fast-forward to this spring and Cole–who sharpened his acting skills at Steppenwolf–is set to begin shooting the new HBO comedy “12 Miles of Bad Road,” which also stars Lily Tomlin and Mary Kay Place. It’s about the foibles of a wealthy Dallas family.

Before “12 Miles” popped up, Cole, who grew up in Rolling Meadows, had been trying to fit a trip home for a possible Steppenwolf return–and some quality time at Wrigley Field (this sentence as published has been corrected in this text).

“I’m a weary Cub fan at this point,” he said. “A baseball purist is a fan for life. You get tagged with a team from your childhood and that’s who you die with so I’ve got no choice. I will root for the Cubs.”
