Mychael Knight may not have won Season 3 of Bravo’s “Project Runway,” but the designer has plenty of irons in the fire.
His Web site, mychaelknight.com, lists his new fragrance for women, Majk, and a proposed line of apparel, tastefully named Kitty & Dick. The 28-year-old is meeting with fans at Starbucks around the country to promote a limited run of customized T-shirts he designed. Knight’s free “My Starbucks” shirts are available on starbucks.com through Feb. 28.
In a recent phone interview, Knight said he’s a big fan of the macchiato with extra caramel. But when the conversation switched from coffee to Brandy–specifically, whether he was dating the pop star, Knight assumed the characteristics of the Venti double-iced version of the drink.
“Am I! Are you dating Brandy? Huh? Let’s not talk about that. Let’s talk about Starbucks,” he said.
– On why the “Y” instead of the “I” in Mychael: “That’s the way I’ve always spelled it. When I filled out the ‘Project Runway’ application, I put my birth name on there. But everybody in Atlanta knows me by Mychael with a ‘y.’ “

– On what else he’s been working on besides the My Starbucks T-shirts: “That’s been taking up most of my time. I’ve been so excited, and I want it to be a successful campaign. But I’m still doing custom design work for the few artists that I have (112, Jagged Edge) and working on developing a new fragrance for women. What else is going on? Right now that’s all I can think of, I’m having a brain freeze. I am working on starting my own label, but I’m really not rushing into it. There’s a lot more involved with it than just designing T-shirts and manufacturing. There’s a business side that comes before all that. But when it’s ready, it’ll definitely be out.”
– On whether he’ll be assisting during the auditions phase of “Runway’s” next season: ” ‘Project Runway’ is one of the few shows that doesn’t have a very extensive, long contract (with contestants). Since the beginning of this year, I haven’t really spoken to anyone at Bravo about anything. I’m hoping that something will happen, but I don’t know.”
– On reaction to the collection he showed at Bryant Park: “I was just in the fabric store the other day, and I ran into a young lady, and she said she really, really loved my collection. Everything, feedback-wise, from everybody has been good. There’s nothing bad. I don’t look online at blogs or anything like that. It’s just not my thing. I’m too busy with Starbucks, trying to get things going. But regardless of what they said, I did it because I loved it. Point blank. I loved it, no more to say. It gave exactly what I wanted it to give.”
