Northwestern’s softball team, coming off a second-place finish in the Women’s College World Series, opens the season this weekend at the Kujikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. On Saturday, after facing No. 21 Fresno State, 4th-ranked NU meets No. 1 Arizona, which swept last year’s championship series in two games. “It’ll be good for us,” coach Kate Drohan said of the rematch. “This is easily our most difficult weekend of the year. It’ll be nice to get out there and play one of the best teams.” On Friday, NU meets No. 13 Texas A&M and No. 21 Fresno State. Big Ten pitcher of the year Eileen Canney and first baseman Garland Cooper, a two-time conference player of the year, lead the returning starters for NU, 50-15 last year.
