Q rarely passes on the chance to taste-test chocolate, and this time it has nothing to do with the approach of a certain heart-centered holiday.

Hershey’s new Cacao Reserve line features eight tiny dark or milk chocolate truffles in a cute 1.8-ounce tin, as well as 3.53-ounce bars (with cacao from Java, Arriba, Santo Domingo and Sao Tome).

Q loved the tins, with one editor noting that it’s “a way to carry a little chocolate fix without having the chocolate get smushed or cracked in your purse.”

So the container is cool, but how do they taste? The Q staff, ever happy to sample chocolate on a busy afternoon, thought the milk ones were sweet, with almost a slight taste of coconut. “Better than a Hershey’s miniature; worse than Godiva.” The dark chocolate truffles won over Q. “Wow, what a surprise! Very, very nice! And I eat dark chocolate almost every day,” said one chocolate snob.

As for the bars, one tester loved “the straight-ahead chocolate intensity with a hint of maybe coffee” of the Sao Tome. Another tester favored Arriba, noting that its “heart-pounding flavor tastes like hot chocolate as it slowly melts in your mouth.”

The suggested retail price for the tin is $2.89 and the bars are $3.29 at Jewel and Dominick’s.
