A fellowship has been established in the name of the late Steve Irwin to send a Midwestern high school student to Australia for two weeks this summer to study marine science and conservation.

The Australian Consulate in Chicago and the John G. Shedd Aquarium said that students who have participated in the Shedd’s mentor program will be eligible to apply, by March 1, for the fellowship. Shedd educators are to pick the recipient, who is to study at Taronga Zoo in Sydney and Irwin’s Australia Zoo in Queensland.

The Sydney-based banking firm Macquarie Group’s foundation and Qantas Airways are providing support for what is to be a three-year pilot program.
