The newest Chicago bear is not headed to Miami.

The Brookfield Zoo’s tiny polar bear, born Dec. 14, has remained in a maternity den with its mother, Arki, since birth–but video of the cub can be seen at the zoo’s Web site, www.brookfieldzoo.org.

The baby was about 1 1/2 pounds at birth. It’s now up to 10 pounds and is a little larger than a football.

Fully grown male polar bears can weigh up to 1,500 pounds–roughly the weight of an NFL offensive line.

Zookeepers have not yet determined the baby’s gender.

Arki, 22, has had five successful litters. Her baby born November 2003 was named Payton–that’s for Walter, not Manning.

The new baby will make its public debut this spring. The public will be invited to name the cub through a contest.
