Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

How do the city’s movers and shakers wiggle their way into the hottest clubs? The big secret to busting through the red velvet ropes isn’t really a secret at all. Like anything, you just have to understand the system and know how to work it.

You can make friends with the bartenders or a friendly bouncer. Who knows, if you strike up a good conversation, they may divulge some insider secrets. You can also talk to the deejay working the turntables at your favorite club. Lots of local deejays have their own mailing lists, and they’ll fill in their fans on where they’re bringing the party next and how to get in.

But by far the easiest way to make like a scenester is to get on some local nightlife promoters’ e-mail lists. You’ll get regular messages from these party planners about private events and nightclub specials that aren’t necessarily offered to walk-up traffic. Many boast hosted bars for early birds, and discounted or no cover before a certain time with an RSVP. Here are a few to start with:

Richmond Group: They organize VIP and public events throughout the city; Bombay Sapphire is their monthly event. To get on their guest list for a shot at free admission (it’s first come, first served), send an e-mail to [email protected].

IMAGE Chicago: This group puts out a ‘zine and serves up information on what’s hip and happening all around the city. Check out their site (www.imagechicago.com/events.aspx) for a packed events calendar, plus details and RSVP information for each party.

Suburban NiteLife: Their monthly parties (usually for singles) offer early admission to many clubs in the suburbs and free giveaways. You must register at nitelife.org.

TYME Productions: Their weekly Feel Good Fridays at Zentra (923 W. Weed St.) is a great deal–RSVP for details and check out all their upcoming events at www.tyme-productions.com.

Obsession Chicago: DJ Jumpin’ James (aka James Feeley) has spun at clubs such as Rockit and Cabaret, and you can sign up to receive updates on his upcoming events by e-mailing him at [email protected] with “Subscribe” as the subject of your e-mail.
