Two longtime trustees objected to the appointment of a new Village Board member this week, saying it was “too soon” to replace Trustee Carl Ceretto, who died on Jan. 1 after a long illness.

Trustees James Quinn and Donald Castaldo stepped away from the dais as Mayor Patrick Kitching read the oath of office to newly appointed Trustee Daniel Godfrey, a member of the Fire and Police Commission.

“I have no respect for the appointment,” Quinn said. “Not for the man, but for the appointment.”

Kitching, noting that an ailing Ceretto had not attended a board meeting since June, nominated Godfrey last week and presented the nomination for approval at a Monday night board meeting.

“That chair has been empty for seven months,” Kitching said. “This village does not run by itself. I need a full board.”

The nomination passed on a 4-2 vote with Quinn and Castaldo dissenting.

Godfrey, 46, has lived in the village for 25 years. He has a master’s degree in public administration and is a captain with the Bedford Park Police Department.

The term ends in April.
