Former Illinois all-conference tight end Tim Brewster, who captained the 1984 Rose Bowl team, will be named head coach at Minnesota, according to a source close to the situation. Brewster, who spent the past two seasons as tight ends coach of the Denver Broncos, will replace Glen Mason, who was fired last month. The source said Brewster was in Minnesota on Monday night meeting with university President Robert Bruininks and Provost E. Thomas Sullivan to iron out details. Before joining the Broncos, Brewster coached tight ends for San Diego. Brewster also has 14 years of Division I-A coaching experience, primarily at North Carolina and Texas. Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Haywood also was interviewed for the job.
