“CRUNK HITS VOL. 3”
RATING: 2 SOUND LEVELS
Three 6 Mafia’s “Poppin’ My Collar” continues the group’s cherished but tired lyrical themes. Webstar and Young B.’s “Chicken Noodle Soup” is irritating and repetitive, while LL Cool J’s “Head Sprung” reinforces his ability to adapt to hip-hop’s popular styles. The definition of crunk feels stretched with Pussycat Dolls’ “Don’t Cha,” but then again, this is a greatest hits comp. For innovation, Pitbull’s “Ay Chico (Lengua Afuera)” wins. Tracks from Chris Brown, Ying Yang Twins, Too $hort, David Banner and others round out this testament to the widespread appeal of a genre once seen as a fad offshoot of gangsta rap.
