Illinois basketball coach Bruce Weber received a badly needed pick-me-up a few hours after Saturday’s 18-point home-court loss to Ohio State when 6-foot-3-inch Quinton Watkins, a senior shooting guard from Compton (Calif.) Dominguez High, called to make an oral commitment.
Rivals.com–which quoted the recruit as saying he made the choice because “I like their style of play and coach Weber”–lists him as its 83rd-ranked player and top-ranked shooting guard left in the class of 2007.
A slashing-style scorer also regarded as a strong defender, Watkins is averaging 21 points and four steals. In one of his games, he scored 17 in the third quarter.
