The Lions are keeping it all in the family. Coach Rod Marinelli hired son-in-law Joe Barry, Tampa Bay’s linebackers coach, as his defensive coordinator. Barry’s father Mike is already Detroit’s assistant offensive line coach. Marinelli tried to hire Joe Barry last year, but Bucs GM Bruce Allen wouldn’t let him out of his contract. Allen also denied the Packers’ request to interview Barry last season and wouldn’t let him interview as the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator in 2004. Allen takes the sanctity of a contract quite literally for the son of George Allen, a Bears assistant when he tried to leave in 1965 to coach the Rams. George Halas sued. As soon as a judge upheld “the sanctity of a contract,” Halas let Allen leave.
