QURIOUS CONSUMER

If you saw the Gap ad for waiflike Audrey Hepburn’s skinny black pants and knew that women your age would never be able to squeeze into them, you can rejoice. Kellie Poulos, owner of 14-year-old Asinamali, an Evanston boutique known for its hip, skimpy fashions for the younger set, had you in mind when she opened Coucou next door (1716 Sherman Ave., Evanston, 847-869-8203).

The store: The small contemporary space has walnut floors and fixtures. Soft nature-inspired watercolors by Evanston resident Peggy Macnamara, artist-in-residence at the Field Museum, add a feminine touch.

Why it’s hot: Stay-at-home moms, professional women and empty nesters will find clothes to fit their lifestyle and their body type. Pants from Isda & Co., made out of classic menswear fabrics, are cut with a higher rise and are fuller through the hips and thighs ($159.50 to $179.50). Pair them with On-Your-Back T-shirts that are slightly fitted, but not skin tight, in a wide array of colors ($59.50 to $62.50). White blouses from Paris, lush Italian cashmere sweaters or unique hand-knit ones are other options. Velvet skirts and silks and satins from Ohm are perfect for an elegant evening out. A small selection of hats, scarves and jewelry simplify adding a personal touch.

Why it’s not: While these are fashions that women have been waiting for, shoppers will leave the store wishing that the choices could be multiplied many times over.

Bottom line: The name Coucou is the up-to-date way to say “hi there” in French, and the fashions in this boutique reflect the hip, contemporary style of the greeting. Women will find traditional and trendy wardrobe choices that reflect their uniqueness so they don’t have to look dowdy or dress like teenagers.
