Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If you’re under 40, you likely grew up with LL Cool J, a rap pioneer who transitioned into a respectable actor. In his latest incarnation, the 38-year-old married father of four is a workout guru/author, using his new book, “LL Cool J’s Platinum Workout,” to educate fans on how to get bigger and deffer. (If you’re over 40, that alludes to one of his records.)

The Guy Page: Why do you work out?

LL Cool J: “It’s something that affects not only the outside but also the inside. It’s about your approach to life in general. I was always into fitness, but five years ago I looked in the mirror and was dissatisfied with what I saw, so I decided to reinvent myself.”

GP: Is that hard to do in your mid-30s?

LL: “When you see a 22-year-old selling workout videos, you’re like, `OK. You’d look like that anyways.’ The way I work out and the way I eat is going to work for somebody in their 30s. That doesn’t guarantee you’re going to look the way I look; you may not have the genetics to get big, bulging muscles. But you’ll look the best you can.”

GP: What is the most common mistake guys make when working out?

LL: “Going too hard in the beginning. They buy five new outfits, new headbands and some spandex. They drink seven Red Bulls the first day. Then they can’t keep it up.”

GP: Do guys lift weights for the same reason they rap–women?

LL: “Yeah, it’s that combination. You want to look good for the ladies and yourself. But I’m on stage for an hour and a half, so I can’t be exhausted. I can’t fall out after 15 minutes.”
