Fundraisers

– The Westchester Community Image Council will hold a Candlelight Bowl fundraiser at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 in Broadview Bowl, 2812 S. 17th Ave., Broadview. The cost is $30 per adult and includes dinner, three games of bowling, shoe rental and raffles. Proceeds will go to projects in 2007. To reserve a lane, e-mail [email protected].

Volunteer opportunities

– Giving DuPage has a listing of volunteer opportunities in DuPage County posted on its Web site: www.givingdupage.org. The 2006 Holiday Giving Guide features 52 agencies with specific needs. For more information, call 630-407-6458.

– The Southwest Suburban Center on Aging in La Grange is seeking volunteers to serve on the planning committee for its sixth annual Sports Ball to be held in April 2007. Sports celebrities are expected to attend the event, which includes dinner, dancing and a silent auction. The organization’s mission is to enrich the quality of life of older adults and their families through a range of programs and services. – The Kane County Forest Preserve District will hold an open house for those interested in volunteering with the district from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 10 in Building G in the Kane County Government Center, 719 Batavia Ave., Geneva. Volunteer opportunities range from educational programs at Tekakwitha Woods to cultural preservation and interpretation at Fabyan Forest Preserve. A volunteer orientation will be held Jan. 24. – State Sen. Kirk Dillard of Hinsdale is asking residents to donate used cell phones to the Call to Protect or HopeLine phone recycling programs. Both efforts aid national programs to end domestic violence. Used phones can be taken to Verizon Wireless retail stores or mailed to ReCellular Inc., 2555 Bishop Circle West, Dexter, MI 48130.

– The In-Home Senior Respite Program of Metropolitan Family Services DuPage needs volunteers to provide short weekly visits for family caregivers. Volunteers provide a social visit only, and no hands-on assistance is required. Volunteers receive training and are matched with families who live in their community. – The Literacy Connection, an organization dedicated to adult literacy in the Elgin area, will hold an orientation session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 4 in the Schaumburg Library’s Hanover Park Branch, 1266 Irving Park Rd., Hanover Park. Those making a difference

– Donors and volunteers with the Fox Valley United Way and Ginger Creek Community Church provided holiday toys for 316 needy children.

– Students in Tony Pecucci’s office technology class at West Leyden High School in Northlake raised $1,000 for the children of Nicholas Artman who died in 2004.

– Waubonsee Community College’s Adult Literacy Project recently named Joyce Schumpert of Plano as Volunteer of the Month for December.
