The Best American Short Stories 2006
Edited by Ann Patchett, series editor Katrina Kension
Houghton Mifflin, 388 pages $14 paper
This collection is what Ann Patchett, in her introduction, calls “the short story Olympics.” This annual showcase of stories, selected this year by Patchett, a Tribune Heartland Prize winner, is robust and rambunctious. Authors include Alice Munro, Aleksandar Hemon, Tobias Wolff and Donna Tartt, and each story leads the reader to beg for another.
