The Village Board this week unanimously approved a conceptual plan for a bike path through the village but stopped short of budgeting funds for the project.

“I like this plan and I think we should get other communities involved to extend these trails to the trails that people want to go on,” Trustee Ray Robertson said.

Trustees said they would likely consider budgeting for the bike-path plan during next year’s budgeting process.

Proponents, including representatives from the Chicago Bicycle Federation, began working on the plan over a year ago.

“People already bicycle in Homewood. Bicycling is a healthy and fun way to provide transportation and recreation,” said Nick Jackson, a member of the biking group.

The bike plan focuses on installing signs, street markings, bike racks and traffic signal improvements along the routes, which stretch from Governors Highway on the west, 175th Street on the north, Halsted on the east and 187th Street on the south.

The village is hoping the bulk of the $200,000 project will be paid for with federal grants. Homewood would pick up about 20 percent of the tab.
