Officials have installed a video surveillance camera at the city’s Metra train station to increase security for commuters.

The camera, which sits atop a telephone pole at the downtown station on Vermont Street just east of Western Avenue, will be trained on the station and surrounding commuter parking lots.

“We’ve been trying to get one for about a year and a half now,” said Mayor Donald Peloquin, adding that the camera is not a response to an increase in crime around the station.

The camera, which will feed video directly to the city’s 911 center, was obtained through a program sponsored by the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, Peloquin said.

Peloquin said the camera should assist police in curbing automobile burglaries and vandalism around the commuter station.
