Halloween parties have become, shall we say, salacious. This weekend, events such as “Shame, Sex and Shackles,” “Pimp ‘N’ Ho Halloween Ball” and “Dead/Sexy Halloween” and parties hosted by Dennis Rodman are happening across the city. We called Courtland Hickey, manager of Chicago Costume in Lincoln Park (1120 W. Fullerton Ave., 773-528-1264), for last-minute fashion advice on the right kind of costume to wear to such an event.

At Play: I want to go to a sexy Halloween party and look ghet … uh, make that, pre-gentrified-fabulous.

Hickey: You want to pimp it out, then?

At Play: Yes. What would it take to look pimp-a-licious?

Hickey: I would set you up with some wonderful jewel-encrusted grillz for your teeth. Like Flavor Flav.

At Play: Aren’t those gaudy designer braces permanent?

Hickey: They are plastic. You put them in boiling water to soften them, then bite down and they fit your teeth. One set is $40 and comes in gold, silver and various levels of encrusted jewels.

At Play: What can I carry my Kool-Aid and vodka in?

Hickey: You have to have a pimp cup ($20-$30). It’s very much like a chalice. Very deep burgundy glass. It’s encrusted with jewels and the word “pimp” is on the side.

At Play: A pimp needs to enter in style. Cane me.

Hickey: We have an excellent selection of canes. Gold tops with money signs on them, or the word pimp, or ones in animal print with a disco ball on top. They’re $9.

At Play: What would make the ladies swoon?

Hickey: A fedora with a large white plume. Purple is a very regal color. Those run around $14. Then you have to get a necklace–the new ones look like a car with spinning hubcaps. There’s also a necklace with a giant “#1,” and another with a big placard that just says, “Pimp.” That’s about $16.

At Play: Shoes?

Hickey: I have vinyl platform shoes in black or white that have fish or dice in the heels. They’re $90, but worth every penny.

At Play: Can you articulate your viewpoints on the social ramifications of an increasingly pimp-tolerant culture?

Hickey: Pimps are so ubiquitous in American culture now. Ten years ago, people thought there was something wrong with it. Nowadays, you can even dress a girl as a pimp. The rules have changed.

At Play: So if I followed your fashion advice, what would be the reaction when I stroll in?

Hickey: You’d look ghetto-fabulous.
