A 20-year member of the Wheeling Police Department has been appointed deputy police chief.
Cmdr. William Benson was sworn in as deputy chief at Monday’s board meeting. He replaces John Stone, who was named police chief this month.
A commander for four years, Benson led the department’s investigations and support services divisions. He was a patrol sergeant from 1996 to 2002 and worked as an officer with the youth and canine units since he was hired in 1986.
