On a $40 million budget, director Sofia Coppola tried her best to approximate the decadent lives of French royals for “Marie Antoinette.” The movie doesn’t skimp on exposing the teenage queen’s lavish lifestyle at the Palace of Versailles.
Star Kirsten Dunst (above left) wears more than 60 specially made costumes. Manolo Blahnik, made famous as a favorite of Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex in the City,” supplied the 18th Century footwear and, for fun, a pair of sneakers.
The complicated costumes and hairpieces helped Dunst get into Marie’s frame of mind. Some of the film’s funniest scenes involve her morning dressing rituals.
“Any discomfort I was feeling I just felt she might have felt,” Dunst said. “All the hours of getting ready, people around you and holding your dresses. … All those things, I think, were appropriate to how she might have felt.”
