A major sewer plant expansion is expected to handle the growing community’s needs for the next quarter century.

The Village Board this week awarded a $13 million contract to expand the main sewer plant north of the police station near Lincoln-Way Lane to Allan Mack and Sons Construction.

When the work is done sometime next year, the plant’s capacity will have quadrupled from 750,000 to 3 million gallons per day, Village Administrator Jerry Ducay said.

The 3-million-gallon figure is the estimated need at “eventual buildout,” he said.

“This is one of the larger projects we’ve ever done,” Ducay said.

Funding the expansion won’t have an equally large impact on taxpayers, he said. The money will come from fees the town has assessed on new developments. “We’ve been planning this for 10 years,” he said.

The planning included environmental impact and avoids any negative effect on Hickory Creek, he said. It is also far enough removed from residential neighborhoods to avoid affecting them, he said.
