A Will County advisory group has endorsed rezoning a Mokena golf course to allow developer Neal Skvorc to construct 31 estate-style homes.

County Planning and Zoning Commission members this week unanimously endorsed changing the zoning of the 44-acre Willow Run Golf Course to residential. The property, north of Interstate Highway 80, has been zoned commercial since 1989.

County planners say redeveloping the tree-lined nine-hole golf course near the intersection of 187th Street and Maple Road follows a general residential development trend around the Mokena and New Lenox areas.

But Orland Park Planning Director Robert Sullivan has asked that the proposed development include a thoroughfare connecting 183rd Street to 187th Street. Such a thoroughfare, he said, would avoid crossing Marley Creek. Sullivan noted wetlands could be affected.

John Coghill, representing the nearby Silver Lakes Country Club, presented the only objection. Coghill obtained assurances that the emergency access road to his property would remain open.
