U. S. officials aren’t promising that the village will have its own postal facility anytime soon, but they do say that if service is enhanced, it could include a counter where mail could be retrieved, a move that village officials would welcome.
At a meeting last week, Mayor Patrick Kitching said the community of 21,000 residents complains about not having its own post office.
Traveling to find a post office is a simmering frustration for residents, Kitching told residents, state and federal officials and postal officials.
The village is seeking a postal facility with including mail carriers and delivery vehicles.
According to Vince Martinez, a postal operations analyst, a full-service facility for Alsip is a longshot. The postal service is spending “less dollars on facilities,” he said.
State Rep. Kevin Joyce (D-Chicago) said a facility in town could relieve pressure on the busy Mt. Greenwood post office.
