David Tutera, who has been throwing parties for some two dozen years for the likes of Elton John, Tommy Hilfiger and Shania Twain, recently appeared at Macy’s State Street to advise would-be brides and grooms on creating the perfect wedding registry and how to entertain together as a couple.
TIP NO. 1: Keep it simple. “Don’t try to become a gourmet chef the first time you entertain,” he says. “If you can’t cook, don’t.” Instead, Tutera recommends novice hosts throw a cocktail party or brunch, which are casual and keep cooking and prep work to a minimum. He suggests the same keep-itsimple attitude when buying or registering for home accessories — i.e., get lots of glass bowls and vases (fill with flowers or water and floating candles for an elegant centerpiece).

If there is a rule of thumb when it comes to Tutera-style entertaining, it’s that a great party should indulge all five senses.
Here, from Tutera’s book “The Party Planner” (Bulfinch, 208 pages, $29.95), are a few tips for setting the mood for an autumn fete with sight, smell, sound, taste and touch in mind.
