A new program in Oak Park allows shoppers who spend a minimum of $300 between Aug. 12 and Oct. 31 to earn a $50 gift certificate to use during the holiday shopping season in the village beginning Nov.1.
“We are just trying to spark a little more shopping early in the season,” said Chris Jamrozy, marketing and special events coordinator for Downtown Oak Park.
A few rules apply, including a requirement that a minimum of $25 be spent in three different retail stores or restaurants. Someone could spend $250 in one store, buy lunch with a friend for $25 and then go to the movies at the Lake Theatre a few times to qualify for the gift certificate, Jamrozy said.

Original receipts should then be taken to the Downtown Oak Park office, 1101 Lake St., Suite 202, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays until Oct. 31. On weekends with good weather, an information tent at Marion and Lake Streets will be set up to process receipts from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. If the weather turns bad on the weekend, the processing will take place in the Downtown Oak Park office on Saturdays and Barbara’s Bookstore at Lake and Marion on Sundays.
The new gift certificate program is in addition to the 12th annual holiday gift certificate program that starts Nov. 1, Jamrozy said.
