NORTHWESTERN

Redshirt freshman quarterback Andrew Brewer will get his second straight start Saturday as Mike Kafka’s strained hamstring continues to heal. “Mike is not there yet, and I’m not going to risk a season-ending injury,” coach Pat Fitzgerald said. Fitzgerald said he believes Kafka will be healthy enough to play in a reserve role. C.J. Bacher has recovered from a stress fracture. Fitzgerald indicated the healthier backup would get the call if needed. . . . Safety Bryan Heinz, who had hoped to play for the first time this season after recovering from an ankle injury, left practice after the same foot was stepped on.
