Illinois coach Ron Zook and Michigan State coach John L. Smith were reprimanded and their respective schools were fined $10,000 by the Big Ten for their players’ conduct after the Illini’s upset victory Saturday. Players from both teams engaged in pushing and shoving after Illinois attempted to plant its flag at midfield at Spartan Stadium. Zook apologized at his postgame news conference. “Had I seen it (happen) I’d have grabbed the flag and not done it,” he said. Zook apologized again on Wednesday. “We are going to win and lose with class,” he said. “That’s not something we are going to allow to happen. I’m not trying to make any excuses, [but] it was a spontaneous, emotional outbreak.”
